The aftercare of a nose surgery

In the first few days after the operation, especially during the first 48 hours, swelling of the nose, occasional pain in the wound area, as well as dull headache, especially if the nose has been tamponised, are common. That's why you are limited in your normal activities. If possible, you should spend the first few days after surgery in bed with your upper body raised. In order to avoid pain as much as possible, we have developed a special concept for pain elimination in our clinic.

You can minimize postoperative swelling by allowing yourself to rest as much as possible on the following days. Any swelling that develops is usually the greatest on the second or third day after surgery, and then gradually fades.

Slight bleeding from the nose in the days immediately after the operation is normal. Your surgeon will probably ask you to avoid nasal dryness during the first week so as not to interfere with your healing.

Nasal and midface bruising usually disappears within two or three weeks after the procedure. Any numbness of the skin usually returns slowly. Nasal tamponades are removed a few days after surgery, all splints and sutures removed after about ten to fourteen days.

In order not to endanger the healing process, however, freshly-operated people should avoid alcohol and nicotine. For two to three months you should refrain from sports and lifting heavy loads as well as sauna and steam bath visits. Avoid any rubbing or nudging as well, such as sun exposure for about eight weeks. Nevertheless, newly-operated people can return to their normal everyday activities after just a few days. You can easily wear contact lenses directly after the operation. Glasses should not be worn after removal of the nasal plaster for six to eight weeks. In order to avoid any pressure on the newly formed nose and thus an impairment of the surgical result, the glasses should be fixed with an adhesive tape on the forehead if necessary or a plastic rail should be worn under the glasses.

Each nasal surgery is associated with minor inconvenience even after surgery. One of these is the swelling, which results automatically and always after an operation on the nose. However, there are also ways to reduce the swelling and speed up the swelling.

What can cause swelling?
After surgery, swelling is inevitable. Especially in the case of nasal surgery, the bone is often altered and sometimes even broken. A nose correction is different for each person. The more intensively the bones are involved with the procedure the stronger the subsequent swelling. The intervention in such a sensitive area causes the tissue to produce fluid which also causes the swelling.

What helps against the swelling?
The sooner something is done against the swelling of the tissue in and around the nasal area, the sooner the unpleasant side effects of the nasal operation are reduced. Cooling is always very helpful. This should begin as soon as possible after the procedure to suppress the spread of the swelling even in the initial stages. Usually, the clinic will have the cooling pads pre cooled in sufficient quantities to counteract the swelling immediately.

How long does the swelling last?
The swelling that develops on the nose after a nasal surgery are normal reactions of the body, which unfortunately can not be completely prevented. The swollen areas in the face can spread over the nose and also pass over to the eyes, which are then swollen accordingly after the procedure. In the case of swelling, the basic constitution of a person plays a role each persons body responds. Ultimately, however, the swelling always persists for up to two to three weeks after the procedure.

What to do to avoid swelling?
A good preparation for nasal surgery is the basis for preventing swollen tissue as much as possible after surgery. This includes an extensive consultation with the surgeon, who carries out the nasal surgery and also gives guidance before and after the operation.

Two weeks before the scheduled appointment, all over-the-counter and prescription medicines should be discontinued if agreed with the medical professional. Since the body needs some time to dissipate all pollutants, two weeks preparation time is recommended.
