After Surgery

The success of your surgery can clearly be seen shortly after the operation. Yet it will take several weeks to fully judge the cosmetic effect. This period demands patience, as several restrictions are necessary. In the first few days following the operation you will feel discomfort in your tight breasts. Although you may resume your normal daily activities within several days following the operation, your body will still require lots of rest in the first four weeks for the tissue to heal and so that the implant does not slip out of place. The tension in your breasts will remain for roughly four to six weeks. It can take months until the normal feeling in your breasts returns.
On the first day after surgery, the drainage tubes laid by the surgeon are usually removed. The bandage can either be immediately taken off or in the next few days. In the first three weeks a specially fitting bra supports the newly operated breast. Eight to ten days after surgery the stitches are removed. Most women feel ready to go back to work after one week.
As soon as the bandage and stitches are removed, you can start taking care of your incisions. There are special ointments or bandages that can be worn for several weeks. In the third week, you can start breast massage to help spread the implant capsule and to prevent a capsule contracture (see Risks). As in all surgical procedures, the incision will appear red at first. It will become paler and thinner in the weeks following. The final result cannot be judged until about six months later.
Women should avoid smoking after breast augmentation so that the healing process will not be disturbed. You will not be able to participate in athletic activities in the first five weeks. Later we recommend wearing a snugly fitting sports bra when physically active. During the first three weeks you should not use the sauna or steam bath. The scar should be protected from exposure to sunlight or the solarium.
Experts recommend routine check-ups after one week, one month, three months and one year.
